Much like with canal boats and caravans, there are generally two types of owners of motorhome conversions.
Some opt for the van life year-round, enjoying their existence as a free-spirited digital nomad working wherever the road takes them, and there are those who instead enjoy campervans on a more seasonal basis.
Both options are fantastic and worth embracing, but they also require two different approaches to winterisation.
In the former’s case, it is about ensuring that the motorhome works well during a more difficult time of the year and there is a place for it to stay when meeting friends and family, whilst for the latter it is about performing the types of care and maintenance that will make it fighting fit for the new year.
Here are some top tips for keeping your motorhome secure over the Winter.
Drain The Water Tanks And Clean Them Thoroughly
If a motorhome is left to its own devices over the winter, the cold temperatures can cause its water system to freeze. Much like when the pipes freeze in a house, it can get very bad and very expensive when this happens.
This means that the first step when you decide to park up for the winter is to drain your entire water system, leaving the taps wide open to ensure that every drop of both your drinking and grey water tanks leaves your system.
Disconnect The Battery
Before putting the motorhome in storage for more than a few weeks, charge all of the batteries and then disconnect them, putting them ideally somewhere they are unlikely to get too cold.
This stops them from discharging, which can lead to huge problems in the spring.
Store In A Dry Place
The ideal location for a motorhome is at ground level, in a dry place protected from the weather and from the particularly biting effects of winter, to ensure that the tyres, the exterior and the engine are ready to go.
